Saltery Cove Offroad Fishing Trip
Our most sought-after adventure is a full-day off-road fishing trip to Saltery Cove, spanning 40 round-trip miles of breathtaking scenery and incredible all day fishing. You will travel by UTV or ATV across streams, mountain terrain and under a canopy of alders.
Fishing is packed with lots of bent over rods, screamin reels and line stripping head shakers. Keep your camera nearby because you never know when Yogi and Boo Boo will be down to the river to say “hi” as you fish for salmon.
Book early as this trip does fill up quickly throughout the season.

Your adventure begins at the staging area in the American River parking lot, located at the head of Middle Bay—just a short 20-minute drive south of Kodiak. Upon arrival, you’ll be outfitted with waders, boots, rain jackets, and all the necessary gear for the trip. Before we set off, our team will provide a detailed safety briefing and trip overview.
Once prepped, we’ll load up into our state-of-the-art UTVs for a comfortable and thrilling ride through Kodiak’s rugged mountain terrain. These machines handle river and stream crossings with ease, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the stunning scenery—lush green mountains, vibrant summer wildflowers, and abundant wildlife along the way.
After approximately 1.5 hours, we’ll arrive at the breathtaking Saltery Cove, nestled in Uyak Bay. Our secluded fishing river winds through the valley, teeming with healthy populations of salmon, char, and trout. We’ll strategically fish different locations based on your preferences, using either fly rods or spinning gear. Expect plenty of action, excitement, and, of course, big smiles.
And don’t be surprised if a Kodiak brown bear drops by to check out the fishing—our experienced guides ensure all wildlife encounters remain safe and enjoyable.
At the end of an unforgettable day, we’ll pack up our gear, belongings, and your fresh catch for the return trip. The ride back is just as exhilarating, with stops at scenic points of interest along the way.
Once we return to the staging area, we highly recommend the Kodiak Smokehouse for professional fish processing, but you’re welcome to handle it however you prefer.
This is more than just a fishing trip—it’s an Alaskan wilderness experience you’ll never forget!

EXCELLENT Based on 48 reviews Wes2024-10-16Verified Kodiak Adventures Travis is normally closed by October but after inquiring about a tour, he gladly took us out for a great day of sightseeing and fall fishing. We saw seals, eagles, deer, wild horses, and got a glimpse of a bear. We also stopped at a few fishing spots and caught some late run salmon. Travis was a great guide with plenty of knowledge about Kodiak. Highly recommend you schedule your adventures with Head Shakers Kodiak Dennis C2024-09-05Verified Best guides in Kodiak Do not go salmon fishing on Kodiak if you aren’t with Headshakers. Travis and Jack actually guide you and not just throw you in the water and hope you know how to fish. They know where the fish are, do a good job of making sure other groups do not try to move in on your spot and actually teach you about the fish, how to catch them, what to do in order to not spook them and they will also clean them to make it easier for travel. Both days I got my limit within an hour. I have seen other groups with guides and they look like a bunch of fifth graders at recess. Don’t make a mistake by not booking with Headshakers. This was my second season with them and I’ll be near next year. Kohl S2024-09-01Verified Great river fishing Travis is a great guide and fisherman! He got us on Silvers and made the two days amazing even when the weather was tough on day one. First time fly fishing and he and Jack his assistant made it great! Thanks Josh A2024-09-01Verified Best river fishing experience! Outstanding operation! Everything went smooth from getting geared up, the ride out to the fish. Travis and Jack seemed to be right there when you have a fish on or if you needed help. With six in my group these to kept us spread out and on fish. They answered questions and shared a lot of knowledge about the fish and the area. Definitely worth going with, I know I will next time I get a chance. Many more pictures could have been used but they took pictures with all the fish we wanted! Caleb H2024-09-01Verified Travis is a class act Travis put together two amazing days of fishing for a group of 6 of us. He was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable. His professionalism and attitude was a breath of fresh air. Definitely would recommend him to anyone looking for a top tier river guide on Kodiak Island. arpdtg19602024-08-16Verified Saltery experience Far exceeded expectations. Kicked off with breathtaking views of the northern lights at a 3am call out by middle bay at the staging area. Then a thrilling 90 minute UTV ride twisting and turning our way thru the brush and water holes on the trail to saltery cove. At sunrise we encountered a bear - he wanted what was on our stringer, but Jack held him off. I’ve never held a fly rod in my hand before. Jack was so patient and positive!! Started off slow, but ended limiting out on sockeye before noon. Went to the estuary of Ugak bay, seen the wild horses with a spring foal, many eagles, and for last good measure, another bear right on the trail as we headed back to the staging area. Thank you, and bless you for an adventure I will never forget. Kathryn C2024-08-15Verified If you want to get to where the salmon are and have an amazing time book with Head Shaker! Amazing trip- our guides were incredibly patient with us and gave us many tips and made sure we all knew the rules and what to expect - we were outfitted with quality gear and the 5 in my group caught our limit but more importantly had a fantastic day! Both guides were professional, fun and informative -I learned a ton about salmon fishing and would highly recommend them Scenic524021251022024-08-13Verified Third Straight Season Fishing with Travis My brother and I have just finished our third straight season fishing with Travis. He is an unbelievable guide and coach. GlasgowPotomac, MD Mark M2024-08-07Verified Fishing trip to Saltery Travis is very professional and knows where the fish are. He is willing to leave early in order to get to the fishing hole before anyone else is there. He has reliable equipment and you feel safe at all times. I have taken several trips to Saltery over the years and Head Shakers is by far the best experience I have had. Dan E2024-07-29Verified Do this fishing/sightseeing trip. Travis was worried about how our fishing experience would go on a weekend as the fishing area gets busy with locals during the sockeye salmon run. We bit the bullet and started our trip at 3am (2:50 actually as we were ready to go early and this extra 10 mins was the difference between having the entire fishing beach and just a part of it). I cannot stress how seriously worth it this decision was. We were the first people to an absolutely perfect fishing hole where all the sockeyes were grouped up together waiting to go upstream. Literally like fish in a barrel. All 3 in our party caught our 10 fish limit and had an amazing time with Jack, our guide, who worked tirelessly to keep our gear functional so we could have our rods out fishing non-stop the entire time. We even had a beaver swim right by our feet while we were fishing. I had mentioned to Travis that we wanted to “sightsee” as well as fish which he said he would do his best to accommodate but most importantly we wanted to see a Kodiak brown bear. By 10:30am we had caught our limit and Jack took us to the weir upstream where we saw a Momma bear and her 2 cubs fishing for salmon. Absolutely fantastic day and we couldn’t be happier. We were back in town by 1:30pm with the fish prepped for packaging, all thanks to Travis making us start so early. This trip is not cheap but I cannot stress just how seriously it was totally worth every penny. We did get checked for fishing licenses by state troopers on the way home and we are pretty sure fish&game was out by our area watching us as well so don’t try to skirt any rules and hopefully you’ll have as good of an experience as we did.Showing our latest reviews
