Road System Fishing Trips
Fun and exciting fishing right off the pavement. Kodiak road system rivers offer some very rewarding fishing and scenery. Catching your limit is still totally achievable with our guides who know the rivers better than the rest. We know where it’s hot and where it’s not.

Road system fishing trips are a fun, rewarding experience that offer easier river accessibility. The river system we guide depends on the time of year and which river system is producing quality angling. On a standard day, we meet our clients at 7:00 am at the American River parking lot and gear up with the required layering and waders.
After an informative safety brief, we travel to our different river systems. Walk and wade style fishing is highly encouraged along with relocating to different rivers throughout the day.
One river we may be targeting Silver Salmon (Coho) and the next river we will focus on Dollie Varden (Char), and the next a mixed salmon species (Coho, Humpy, and Chum). Mid-day we take a break and enjoy lunch that is provided.
After lunch we finish the day off with a hard push targeting the species our client’s desire. At the end of the day, we will rendezvous at the American River and stow our gear. Once back we highly recommend and utilize the Kodiak smokehouse to do all our processing. Of course, you have the preference to process yourself or use whomever you want.
Road system trips can be customized to flexible timelines and time constraints. Many clients with limited mobility issues take advantage of this trip due to river access availability by standard mode of transportation.
Items provided are:
Waders, rods, reels, tackle, bait, lunch, drinks, transportation, fish coolers, and standard gear.
Clients need to bring:
Fishing license, rain gear, layering, and personal items.

All trout and steelhead will be catch and release. Only 2 king salmon per year (rivers only). Limits can be increased and decreased at the discretion of ADFG. A short 20-minute drive south of town is the American river parking lot and you will find our staging area. There we keep all our equipment and UTV’s. The staging area is where we meet our clients and start/end our trips. Enjoy our dry and clean space to don your waders out of the rain and mud.
The road system trip allows us to access river systems by standard mode of transportation. It is for guests not wanting to ride in the UTV for 1.5hrs. We drive our vehicles to different rivers and fish.
Yes, we will be fishing around other sport fishermen.
It is totally dependent on our guests. We understand that some guests do not want to do much walking but to get you into quality secluded fishing waters some walking will be required. Other guests are completely happy with lots of walk and wade style fishing.
That is dependent on the guest’s preference and the quality of fishing. Typically, we like to hit multiple spots and fish multiple river systems. The more you are willing to walk and wade the more prime fishing holes we can hit
We accommodate that desire for many clients. We have locations that are easy to access with our vehicles and don’t require any walking. The fishing bite is steady throughout the day and has easy walking terrain. A picnic style lunch is served with chairs and comfortable accommodations to give you a relaxing experience.
For this trip we do not have a limit.
Yes, please contact us if you want a half day trip.
Yes, we commonly fish the morning bite for a couple hours and then drive our clients around to see Kodiak. We have many key points of interest on the road system that are fun and exciting to see. Contact us with what you are wanting and we can make it happen.
That is dependent on the experience the guest wants. For walk and wade style fishing then you will have to wear waders. For bank fishing we recommend wearing rubber boots. We will work with you to give you the trip you desire.
No, there are no public restrooms on any of our trips.
EXCELLENT Based on 48 reviews Wes2024-10-16Verified Kodiak Adventures Travis is normally closed by October but after inquiring about a tour, he gladly took us out for a great day of sightseeing and fall fishing. We saw seals, eagles, deer, wild horses, and got a glimpse of a bear. We also stopped at a few fishing spots and caught some late run salmon. Travis was a great guide with plenty of knowledge about Kodiak. Highly recommend you schedule your adventures with Head Shakers Kodiak Dennis C2024-09-05Verified Best guides in Kodiak Do not go salmon fishing on Kodiak if you aren’t with Headshakers. Travis and Jack actually guide you and not just throw you in the water and hope you know how to fish. They know where the fish are, do a good job of making sure other groups do not try to move in on your spot and actually teach you about the fish, how to catch them, what to do in order to not spook them and they will also clean them to make it easier for travel. Both days I got my limit within an hour. I have seen other groups with guides and they look like a bunch of fifth graders at recess. Don’t make a mistake by not booking with Headshakers. This was my second season with them and I’ll be near next year. Kohl S2024-09-01Verified Great river fishing Travis is a great guide and fisherman! He got us on Silvers and made the two days amazing even when the weather was tough on day one. First time fly fishing and he and Jack his assistant made it great! Thanks Josh A2024-09-01Verified Best river fishing experience! Outstanding operation! Everything went smooth from getting geared up, the ride out to the fish. Travis and Jack seemed to be right there when you have a fish on or if you needed help. With six in my group these to kept us spread out and on fish. They answered questions and shared a lot of knowledge about the fish and the area. Definitely worth going with, I know I will next time I get a chance. Many more pictures could have been used but they took pictures with all the fish we wanted! Caleb H2024-09-01Verified Travis is a class act Travis put together two amazing days of fishing for a group of 6 of us. He was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable. His professionalism and attitude was a breath of fresh air. Definitely would recommend him to anyone looking for a top tier river guide on Kodiak Island. arpdtg19602024-08-16Verified Saltery experience Far exceeded expectations. Kicked off with breathtaking views of the northern lights at a 3am call out by middle bay at the staging area. Then a thrilling 90 minute UTV ride twisting and turning our way thru the brush and water holes on the trail to saltery cove. At sunrise we encountered a bear - he wanted what was on our stringer, but Jack held him off. I’ve never held a fly rod in my hand before. Jack was so patient and positive!! Started off slow, but ended limiting out on sockeye before noon. Went to the estuary of Ugak bay, seen the wild horses with a spring foal, many eagles, and for last good measure, another bear right on the trail as we headed back to the staging area. Thank you, and bless you for an adventure I will never forget. Kathryn C2024-08-15Verified If you want to get to where the salmon are and have an amazing time book with Head Shaker! Amazing trip- our guides were incredibly patient with us and gave us many tips and made sure we all knew the rules and what to expect - we were outfitted with quality gear and the 5 in my group caught our limit but more importantly had a fantastic day! Both guides were professional, fun and informative -I learned a ton about salmon fishing and would highly recommend them Scenic524021251022024-08-13Verified Third Straight Season Fishing with Travis My brother and I have just finished our third straight season fishing with Travis. He is an unbelievable guide and coach. GlasgowPotomac, MD Mark M2024-08-07Verified Fishing trip to Saltery Travis is very professional and knows where the fish are. He is willing to leave early in order to get to the fishing hole before anyone else is there. He has reliable equipment and you feel safe at all times. I have taken several trips to Saltery over the years and Head Shakers is by far the best experience I have had. Dan E2024-07-29Verified Do this fishing/sightseeing trip. Travis was worried about how our fishing experience would go on a weekend as the fishing area gets busy with locals during the sockeye salmon run. We bit the bullet and started our trip at 3am (2:50 actually as we were ready to go early and this extra 10 mins was the difference between having the entire fishing beach and just a part of it). I cannot stress how seriously worth it this decision was. We were the first people to an absolutely perfect fishing hole where all the sockeyes were grouped up together waiting to go upstream. Literally like fish in a barrel. All 3 in our party caught our 10 fish limit and had an amazing time with Jack, our guide, who worked tirelessly to keep our gear functional so we could have our rods out fishing non-stop the entire time. We even had a beaver swim right by our feet while we were fishing. I had mentioned to Travis that we wanted to “sightsee” as well as fish which he said he would do his best to accommodate but most importantly we wanted to see a Kodiak brown bear. By 10:30am we had caught our limit and Jack took us to the weir upstream where we saw a Momma bear and her 2 cubs fishing for salmon. Absolutely fantastic day and we couldn’t be happier. We were back in town by 1:30pm with the fish prepped for packaging, all thanks to Travis making us start so early. This trip is not cheap but I cannot stress just how seriously it was totally worth every penny. We did get checked for fishing licenses by state troopers on the way home and we are pretty sure fish&game was out by our area watching us as well so don’t try to skirt any rules and hopefully you’ll have as good of an experience as we did.Showing our latest reviews
